Reproductive homing and fine?scaled genetic structuring of anadromous Baltic Sea perch ( <i>Perca fluviatilis</i> )

چکیده

To investigate the population dynamics of anadromous Baltic Sea perch Perca fluviatilis (Linnaeus), we studied migratory behaviour (arrival to spawning location) and structure (genetic differentiation) three closely located (<50 km) populations. Spawning migration lasted for 32–80 days, passive integrated transponder tag (PIT-tag) data indicated that displayed reproductive homing. Populations were differentiated, despite low levels gene flow (3%–5%), differentiation increased with increasing geographic distance. This fine-scaled spatial structuring was likely, at least partly, explained by homing behaviour. Analyses temporal within-stream substructuring yielded inconclusive results, so further studies are required evaluate this. Taken together, our findings highlight potential genetic in indicate multiple mechanisms, such as isolation distance, homing, timing could contribute this pattern. illustrates importance considering cryptic barriers accurately identify units, points need local management perch.

Oceanographic connectivity and environmental correlates of genetic structuring in Atlantic herring in the Baltic Sea

Marine fish often show little genetic structuring in neutral marker genes, and Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus) in the Baltic Sea are no exception; historically, very low levels of population differentiation (F ST ≍ 0.002) have been found, despite a high degree of interpopulation environmental heterogeneity in salinity and temperature. Recent exome sequencing and SNP studies have however show...

Sea lamprey Petromyzon marinus: an exception to the rule of homing in anadromous fishes.

Anadromous fishes are believed to make regular circuits of migration in the sea before homing to their natal rivers. Sea lamprey Petromyzon marinus is an anadromous fish that is an exception to this life-history pattern. It also differs from other anadromous fishes in that its adult phase is parasitic, a feeding strategy that should make homing problematic for lamprey cohorts that become widely...

Feeding range of age 1+ year Eurasian perch Perca fluviatilis in the Baltic Sea.

Using the widespread Eurasian perch Perca fluviatilis as a model organism, feeding ranges were investigated using stable-isotope ratios (δ15 N and δ13 C) and body condition. Differences were found between closely located sampling sites in a littoral area without obvious migration barriers, indicating that individual fish had small feeding ranges. Body condition differences between sampled stati...

Introduction: Baltic Sea Agriculture

A research report from the Swedish Environmental Advisory Council, titled A Strategy for Ending Eutrophication of Seas and Coasts, argues that the Baltic Sea is facing an ecological flip, associated with changes characterized by excessive algal bloom and a fishing industry in crisis (MVB 2005). Eutrophication may be the most severe of the consequences faced by the Baltic Sea. According to HELCO...

Baltic Sea Typology Editors

This article is an update and extension of an earlier publication (SCHERNEWSKI & WIELGAT 2004). Intensive public discussions suggested slight modifications in the typology as well as an updating and completion of comparisons between our typology and the national typologies. We further show examples how the water body concept can be applied to subdivide coastal water types as a response to exter...
